Sri Lanka in 10 Days: Why the Teardrop Island Is India's Best-Value Neighbour Right Now

23 April 2026

The train from Kandy to Ella is 6 hours through the Hill Country — tea plantations on every slope, waterfalls visible from the window seat, tunnels through rock faces, and the air temperature dropping steadily as you climb through 1,500 metres. At one point the train moves around a horseshoe curve where you can see the engine from your carriage window through a gap in the plantation. People hang out the doors. Nobody falls out. This is the most beautiful train journey in Asia and one of the most beautiful in the world, and it costs approximately ₹400 in second class.

Sri Lanka is 1 hour from Chennai, 2 hours from Mumbai. It has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, approximately 127 species of bird found nowhere else on earth, leopards at higher density than almost anywhere else in the world, and food that occupies a specific flavour territory between Indian and Southeast Asian that is entirely its own. The country is also significantly cheaper than most Indian metro cities for accommodation and dining, and significantly emptier of tourists than it should be.

Visa for Indians

Apply at eta.gov.lk. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) costs USD 35 (approximately ₹2,900). Processing: same day to 24 hours. Valid: 30 days, double entry. Requirements: passport, photo, accommodation booking, return ticket. Sri Lanka periodically offers free visa to Indian nationals to stimulate tourism — check the current status before applying.

Sigiriya: The Rock That Shouldn't Exist

A 370-metre granite monolith rising from the plains of the Cultural Triangle. At its summit, a palace built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century — gardens, swimming pools, and audience halls, all on top of a vertical rock. The climb takes 1.5–2 hours via steel staircases bolted into the cliff face, passing midway the Sigiriya frescoes: 5th-century paintings of celestial maidens in natural pigments on a rock overhang. They are extraordinary and intact after 1,500 years. Entry: USD 30 (₹2,500). Go early morning to avoid heat and crowds.

Yala National Park

Sri Lanka has the world's highest density of leopards per square kilometre. The Safari jeep tours from the park boundary last 3–4 hours (₹2,500–4,000 per jeep, 6 person maximum). Elephant sightings are common. Sloth bear, Sri Lanka junglefowl, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, peacocks, painted storks — Yala's biodiversity is exceptional even on safaris where the leopard doesn't show. It usually does.

Galle Fort and the South Coast

Galle Fort is a Dutch colonial fortified city (17th century, UNESCO World Heritage) with intact bastions overlooking the Indian Ocean and a functioning town within its walls — restaurants, boutique hotels, jewellery workshops, cafes. The sunset walk along the fort walls watching the waves is Galle's finest hour. Blue whale watching off Mirissa and Dondra (November to April): Sri Lanka has the highest concentration of blue whales in the world. A 3-hour whale watching boat costs ₹2,500–3,500 per person. Blue whales reaching 30 metres — the largest animal ever to exist — surface 200 metres from your boat.

Sri Lankan Food: An Education

  • Rice and Curry: The daily meal. A plate of rice with 5–7 small curries — dal, jackfruit, beetroot, fish, coconut sambol. ₹150–300 at a local kaadai (small restaurant).
  • Hoppers: Bowl-shaped rice flour crêpes, eaten for breakfast with pol sambol (coconut and chilli relish) and a fried egg in the centre of the egg hopper variety.
  • Kottu Roti: Shredded flatbread stir-fried with egg, vegetables, and meat or fish on a flat iron surface — the rhythmic clatter of the metal blades is audible from 200 metres. Sri Lanka's fast food.
  • Wood Apple Juice: A fruit that smells improbable but tastes extraordinary. Found in Sri Lanka and not easily elsewhere. Drink it cold from a roadside vendor.

Sri Lanka is an island small enough to do justice to in 10 days and layered enough to justify returning on for a different 10. The cultural triangle in the north, the hill country, the national parks, and the south coast beaches are four distinct trips held together by the world's most beautiful train network and extraordinary food. This is not a destination that requires much convincing once you've researched it — the question is usually why people waited this long.
